Marvel Comics asks the big universal question, when the dead fight the dead, where does that leave the living? In the final chapter of George Romero's "Empire of the Dead Act Three" #1, the last round of surviving humans are caught in the crossfire between zombies vs. vampires.
Horror fans everywhere may recognize Romero's name as the genius who scared audiences with the cult classic, Night of the Living Dead. Made for a low budget of $114,000, the Living Dead franchise made millions and went on to spawn numerous sequels, including the latest installment, Origins. Now Romero puts his undead touch on the comic book realm with his latest terrifying project.
As we previously mentioned, the Knightriders director described the supernatural war in Empire of the Dead, "They all want what they want, whether it's right or wrong. So I don't think you're going to see a lot of blinking. There's too much at stake for anyone to give up. Power. Greed. Co-existence. Survival. It's going to be a fight to the finish."
In the narrative by Romero and artist Andrea Mutti, the Big Apple has become a quarantine zone after a horrifying plague swept the nation. As predators lurk within the walls, there are vampires preying on the living and the undead alike. Growing in numbers, the zombies seem to be growing smarter each and every day. Meanwhile, someone is kidnapping the children, who may hold the key to the New York's survival.
In a release statement, series editor Jake Thomas teases how the war is just heating up, "Romero understands the wide possibilities of the comic format and has used it to tell his biggest, most epic story to date. In this final chapter the narrative bomb he's been carefully constructing under Empire of the Dead's Manhattan goes off with a bang! There are dangers coming from all sides, no one is safe, and blood will flow. It's everything an undead head would want from the Godfather of Zombies himself, George Romero!"
George Romero's Empire of the Dead Act Three #1 arrives in stores sometime in April. Redaers, are you excited to see vampires against zombies?
