While South Korean rapper Psy's viral hit "Gangnam Style" has nothing to do with actual gangs, two rival groups in Thailand decided to make the song's dance moves the center of a heated and violent exchange in a recent gun-brandishing shoot-out. According to the Thai news source INN (and translated by the Guardian) young members of two opposing gangs challenged one other in a "Gangnam Style" inspired dance-off - where each individual danced the viral hit's moves "provocatively" until things got out-of-hand and erupted in gun fire in the city of Bangkok.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Santi Panyawong of the Khlong Ton police department, a group of men opened fire at a rival group in Bangkok's Ekkamai neighborhood after the two gangs were spotted dining in the same restaurant. During the gun fight that ensued after the "Gangnam Style" faceoff, one of the gangs allegedly fired at least 50 bullets from a carbine and an 11mm gun. While no one was injured during the shoot-out, numerous cars and motorcycles parked nearby were damaged .The high school-aged kids responsible for the fight now face arrest. Police Lieutenant Colonel Apichart Thongchandee told the Bangkok Post that the two gangs had a history of confrontation.
"We now know who all the attackers are," Lieutenant Panyawong said. "After questioning all the witnesses and inspecting the ammunition, we will seek arrest warrants for them."
On a lighter "Gangnam Style" note, authorities at The Guinness World Record announced on Thursday that Psy's hit dance video broke the record for "Most Likes on YouTube" with his 2,141,758th YouTube "thumbs up" approval.
Again, the hit K-pop tune has nothing to do with gangs - Psy's lyrics merely mock the affluent Seoul suburb Gangnam.
