Andrew McCarthy is an actor, director, and now an author of his first new book "The Long Way Home: One Man's Quest for the Courage to Settle Down." The part memoir will shed light in his battle with alcoholism, insecurities and his acting career. McCarthy is an editor-at-large of National Geographic Traveler, who's had three articles chosen for the Best American Travel Writing series. In his book he wrote, "Success in acting had given me a persona and a shell of confidence; my travels helped me find myself beneath that persona and fill out that shell with belief. Through travel, I began to grow up."
In the book his discusses his divorce with his first wife and his recent engagement to his new fiancé, D., who was planning their wedding when McCarthy decided to leave his Manhattan home to go to the Amazon to climb Kilimanjaro. McCarthy's sudden urge to get up and go may be a serious case of cold feet. He said, "The question wasn't so much if we'd get married, but when and how." McCarthy may have realized his love as a travel editor and actor have opened him up in many ways, "I've traveled in order to feel at home in myself."
McCarthy, has been in many movies, and is well known for being in the 1986 film, "Pretty in Pink." In addition, he has dabbled in directing and provided his experience to TV series, "Lipstick Jungle" and "Gossip Girl" When he was asked if he would turn his book into a movie and if he would play himself, he says, "I'm sure they'd find someone hotter," he said.
