According to a new interview with the New Yorker (via The Hollywood Reporter), Ives said he had "very specific" suggestions for Abrams on the new design of the lightsaber. The main aspect of the lightsaber that Ives influenced wasn't the crossguard hilt, though; it was the "primitive" look of the blade.
"It was just a conversation," he said, according to Slash Film. "I thought it would be interesting if it were less precise, and just a little bit more spitty ... more analog and more primitive, and I think, in that way, somehow more ominous."
The profile on Ive also points out that the two spoke about how they're both known for "working on things that had a level of expectation and anticipation that was preposterous."
What do you think of Ive's suggestion for the new lightsaber? Clearly, this is the direction in which Abrams went with the weapon, as evident in the teaser trailer. It definitely does look more "primitive" and "spitty," as Ive described. We still don't know who suggested the crossguard hilt that has polarized fans of the series, but perhaps it was just Abrams himself!
