Richard Belzer was on Good Day New York for a friendly interview when things quickly turned left. When the female anchor asked for a split screen of her co-anchor and Belzer to see similarities between the two she said, "[The male anchor] should play [Richard's] brother on the show." Belzer nodded into the camera and perhaps had gotten too comfortable and said, "If he gets molested and banged in the ass, maybe." The male anchor looked flushed and said I hope we have 5 second delay and asked for confirmation from the producers, but it was too late.
Quickly, Belzer apologized but didn't stop there, he tried to back track and said, "I meant banged against a piece of furniture." He then turned to the cameras and gave a Nazi salute and said, "Say HEIL to all your colleagues at the other division." Clearly upset, the male anchor began stuttering and said, "That's the end of Richard." The Female Anchor then looked at Richard and began wagging her finger at him and Belzer said, "I thought we were off."
In June, Belzer gave a Nazi salute while using his fingers as a mustache resembling Hitler at a red carpet event. According to TMZ, Belzer's rep defended the Nazi jokes and gave reasoning behind it saying, "satirical gesture toward Fox News ... whose ideology he is opposed to." The rep added, "The other portion was a joke pertaining to the material of Richard's TV show, which he tweaked at the last minute to make about furniture. A joke is a joke."
