Update 2:15 p.m. EST: Mission Cancelled. To be re-scheduled.
The Red Bull Stratos extreme jump by Felix Baumgartner was expected launch via live stream video early this morning, but the the free fall time was delayed due to the weather. The current possible launch time is 11:30 a.m. MDT or 1:30 p.m. EDT.
The 43-year-old Austrian pilot and former military parachutist has prepared for this 23 mile space jump for five years with his final jumps prior to the real deal at 15 miles in March and 18 miles in July.
Baumgartner's jump speed is expected to hit 690 miles or more per hour and the total jump time to last around 10 minutes. Once he nears 9,500 set above sea level or 5,000 feet above ground, he should activate his parachute. It will be the first time any skydiver will break the sound barrier and will provide scientists with important data for a new generation of spacesuits to protect astronauts.
Huffington Post reported that medical doctor Dr. Jonathan Clark said that "no one knows what happens to a body when it breaks the sound barrier."
Baumgartner's spacesuit is expected to protect him during his fall. A team will keep constant communication with him and check his life support data and his oxygen level. If he survives this jump after breaking the sound barrier, it will be an amazing breakthrough.
His coach Andy Walshe is excited rather than nervous and believes that the jump will be a successful one.
