The Red Bull Stratos space jump has been cancelled due to bad weather conditions for the historical skydive to take place. Felix Baumgartner who has been preparing for the free fall for five years showed disappointed in his face after the announcement was made. The new jump date and time schedule will be announced.
The latest update from redbullstratos.com shows that the countdown clock had stopped. Prior to the cancellation, the "30 million cf balloon was being laid out" and "Baumgartner's suit up procedure was complete." He was expected to take the leap at 11:15 MDT, 1:15 eastern time.
The winds should be at 3 mph maximum for a safe launch, however the wins were said to be 20 mph earlier in the morning. Although it did slow down, it was not slow enough to be safe for a successful mission.
@redbullstratos updated on Twitter, "Mission abort due to heavy winds. #straos #livejump"
When asked by a user when the mission would resume, they responded, "We are discussing the options later at a meeting. We will update you shortly. #stratos #livejump"
"We'll make this happen! The conditions have to be right. Thanks all for the unending support! @RedBullStratos #livejump" Red Bull Stratos tweeted not wanting to let down viewers.
Most viewers were understanding and cared most for the safety of Baumgartner. Here are some web reactions to the cancellation:
"My heart was beating because I feared for the diver's life. One part of me is glad the mission is aborted, but I know he will have to prepare for it once again. I had my fingers crossed the entire time!"
@CompassLearning - "@RedBullStratos Now that's safe #science -- way to stay responsible and be a great example to the kids and aspiring daredevils. #STEM"
@MSteiner16 - "@Greitzer @RedBullStratos - I'll give them a pass for worrying abt the weather. Felix would be going 690MPH. Don't want him to blow to Utah."
@dunanddusted - "@RedBullStratos all very dissappointed no doubt, most of all Felix i should imagine ... clearly the safest decision, which is most important"
@Skookumtim - "I guess I'll stick to @MonsterEnergy and their stunts. 60ft gaps on a dirt bike don't let 1.1 million people down. #stratos @redbullstratos"
