Without the world noticing much, the Asteroid TC4 approached the earth and missed it by 59,000 feet on Friday October 12, 2012. The Asteroid was reportedly the size of a house at around 56 feet wide.

NASA's Asteroid Watch program scientists tweeted, “Small asteroid 2012 TC4 will safely pass Earth Oct 12 at just .25 the distance to our moon’s orbit."

NASA astronomers followed the asteroid as it brushed past the earth in order to learn about how it affects the Earth at such a close distance.

Objects that come close to the earth are referred to as near earth objects or NEOs. Some NEOs may pose a threat to the earth and NASA plays a large role in detecting, tracking and classifying the NEOs that come near Earth.
