No matter what the fans want, Roman Reigns is facing Brock Lesnar in the main event of WrestleMania 31 for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. People can complain all they want about Daniel Bryan or whomever else, but Reigns vs. Lesnar is the match we're getting. But is it doomed to fail?
Consider the rumors that came out earlier this week. The Brock Lesnar contract saga continues, and The Wrestling Observer's latest report is that WWE is somewhat confident that the WWE World Heavyweight Champion will sign a new deal with the company despite issues on both sides.
Furthermore, speculation is now circulating that Lesnar could have an extra date on his contract because he walked out on Monday Night Raw two weeks ago. In case you forgot, the WWE World Heavyweight Champion was reportedly backstage at Monday Night Raw two weeks ago after flying into Nashville. WWE had planned to use him on the show and had advertised him to appear alongside Paul Heyman, but something apparently went wrong and only Heyman went out for the segment with Roman Reigns.
Initial reports and rumors said the show went through some late rewrites and WWE simply decided not to use Lesnar last night, but now it appears that there is more to the story. Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer said during his radio show later that night that "something is going on" but cautioned that he is not sure what it is.
PW Insider also reported that sources told the site that there is an issue between Lesnar and WWE tied to their business relationship rather than the creative side. PWI also said Vince McMahon "acknowledged the issue during a SmackDown production meeting" but it's unclear what exactly the boss said.
Meltzer also had the following to say: "There was a heated, loud discussion where Vince and Brock were yelling and screaming at each other, loud enough where other people were concerned, especially for Vince because it really sounded bad."
The Wrestling Observer also reported that the WWE writing team asked McMahon if it needed to create an alternateWrestleMania story without Lesnar, and the boss emphatically said no.
Infamous Reddit user MetsFan4Ever also posted this about Lesnar early Monday:
"The argument that lead to Brock Lesnar storming out of Raw last week was that Brock wanted to go to the UFC show this past weekend and discuss a potential deal with the UFC. Vince McMahon was strongly against this as long as Brock was under WWE contract. Brock stormed out of the building and as we all know, showed up at the UFC show. Unless Vince pulls a miracle off, it is just a matter of time before we see Brock Lesnar headlining another UFC pay-per-view."
There is also apparently significant concern within WWE that Roman Reigns will get booed at WrestleMania 31 no matter what happens. Rumors say if Lesnar does not re-sign, then WWE could use that knowledge to get the fans to turn on him and cheer Reigns instead.
But that shouldn't even need to happen. The problem here is twofold. First, fans have legitimately warmed to Brock Lesnar because he is a freak in the best possible way. He's a monster of a human being capable of beautiful, astonishing athletic feats, and people respect him for it. We simply don't care if he goes to UFC or stays with WWE because we just want to see him compete.
Second, WWE did itself no favors with Reigns, and hardcore fans have already turned on him to the point where there's nothing he can do to salvage that relationship. Now let me be clear. I think the reaction against Reigns has become completely ridiculous. I'm rooting for the guy. I hope he and Lesnar have a five-star match at Mania, and I hope Reigns shines like a star just to prove everybody wrong. But the road WWE has taken to get Reigns to Mania has been filled with potholes, so I can understand why people haven't warmed to him.
There have been all kinds of conspiracy theories about this situation, particularly after Lesnar's backstage situation. There have been rumors that Reigns failed a drug test, but that is purely wild speculation. There are rumors Daniel Bryan is legitimately upset that Reigns is in the main event instead of him but, again, that's just an unfounded rumor. Still, fans love to talk and use any bit of ammo they have to make the case against Reigns.
But I'd implore fans to simply suspend their disbelief and enjoy the match at WrestleMania 31. Let's just watch these two guys put on a show and beat the hell out of each other. After all, it's only a story, and a pretty good one, at that.
