A few weeks ago, we reported on the new "M for Mature" rating for Batman: Arkham Knight from developer Rocksteady. This rating reportedly surprised the developers and also marked the first time in the Arkham video game franchise that a "T for Teen" rating was not given by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. So why did it get a more adult rating this time around? This week, the ESRB published its reasoning behind the rating, revealing some pretty big plot spoilers in the process! Check it out below!

We already know that this adult rating surprised Rocksteady, but have admitted that it doesn't really bother them too much.

"From our point of view, we never wrote it or made it with a rating in mind," Rocksteady founder Sefton Hill explained to IGN last month. "We never did that in the previous two games... We just felt that this is the story that we really wanted to tell."

Now, we've learned pretty much exactly why the ESRB rated the game "M for Mature." In a new post to its website, the company explained that some dialogue was very adult in nature and the violence of the video game also contributed to the decision.

"Enemies cry out in pain when struck, and some takedowns are highlighted by brief slow-motion effects and loud impact sounds. Some sequences allow players to use tank-like vehicles with machine gun turrets and rockets to shoot enemies; a vehicle's wheels are also used to torture an enemy in one sequence," the ESRB revealed. "Cutscenes depict characters getting shot (on and off camera) while restrained or unarmed. Large bloodstains/pools of blood appear in crime scenes and in the aftermath of violent acts; one room depicts a person torturing a character on a bloody operating table."
