The Orionid meteor shower will display its beauty across the sky tonight (October 20 through October 21, 2012). The shooting stars will be a spectacle that you will not want to miss. You can watch online via live stream video provided by NASA starting at 11:00 p.m. eastern time. The show is expected to run into Sunday morning.
"Earth is passing through a stream of debris from Halley's Comet, the source of the Orionids," Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office said.
"Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere should give us dozens of meteors per hour. Since 2006, the Orionids have been one of the best showers of the year, with counts in some years up to 60 or more meteors per hour," he added.
The live streaming will run from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. on NASA's webcast. https://www.nasa.gov/connect/chat/orionids2012.html There will also be a live web chat led by Mitzi Adams.
The Orionid meteor shower is caused by the earth passing through the debris left from Halley's Comet. The skies are expected to be clear throughout the East Coast (NYC, Long Island) and West Coast (California).
There is no need for any special equipment to be able to catch the shooting stars tonight. Just dress warmly and find a dark spot before Sunday sunrise to catch a shooting star with yours friends, family, and loved ones.
