M.I.A. Disses Oprah and 'Jealous' Ex-Boyfriend Diplo Who Wanted To 'Date Katy Perry'

M.I.A. definitely isn't a fan of Oprah Winfrey or her "jealous" ex-boyfriend Diplo. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the London-born rapper M.I.A. discussed an uncomfortable run-in with Winfrey at a party back in 2009. "Time nominated me for one of the most influential people of the 21st century or something and I met Oprah at that party," M.I.A. told Rolling Stone. "And I was like, 'Hey, people are gonna f*cking die in my country. Like, please pay attention.'"

Aside from being a recording artist an producer, M.I.A. is also a social and political activist of Tamil Sri Lankan descent, and has frequently sought to raise awareness of human rights issues in Sri Lanka. However, her activism has been criticised for being too "controversial, and she told Rolling Stone that Winfrey didn't take kindly to her remarks. "She was like, 'You're sh*t because you were rude to Lady Gaga and I'm not talking to you. And I'm gonna interview Tom Cruise jumping on my sofa, so f*ck off,'" M.I.A. said.

According to Us Weekly, Winfrey was "willing to pose for a photo with M.I.A." but she wasn't interested in conversation. "Yeah, she didn't talk to me. She shut me down," M.I.A. said. "She was just like, 'I can't talk to you because you're crazy and you're a terrorist.' And I'm like, 'I'm not. I'm a Tamil and there are people dying in my country and you have to, like, look at it because you're f*cking Oprah and every American told me you're going to save the world.'"

In the interview, meant to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of her 2005 debut album Arular, M.I.A. also touched on her troubled former relationship with Diplo, and said that he "basically just like sh*t on every good thing that was happening to me." M.I.A. continued, "If I was on a cover of a magazine he'll be like, 'What do you want to do, like be on the dentist waiting room table? Like, is that what a magazine is for? It's corny. Like, don't do magazines.'" She says that Diplo was obsessed with her apparent "selling out" when she began to collaborate with mainstream artists like Missy Elliot. "When I got signed by Interscope [Records]," M.I.A. said, "[Diplo] literally smashed my hotel room and broke all the furniture because he was so angry I got picked up by a major label."

M.I.A. also recalls, "I had this person on my shoulder the whole time saying, "It's sh*t, it's sh*t, it's sh*t. You shouldn't be on the charts. You shouldn't be in the magazines and you should not be going to interviews. You should not be doing collaborations with famous people. You should be an underground artist." In retrospect, however, M.I.A. seems to have gained a new perspective on her experience dating Diplo. She adds that, "It's only now when I look back at it in 2015, I can see that he was just jealous and he couldn't wait to be Taylor Swift's best friend and date Katy Perry. You fall in love, and sh*t happens."
