Director David Yates has signed on to helm the project, which is fitting since he directed the final four Harry Potter movies, but no casting news has been reported until this week with Smith. According to The Sun (via MTV News), Smith is the "favorite" to lead the project, which definitely has fans excited!
A petition has already been drafted on Change.org, suggesting Smith would be a great actor to portray the lead, Scamander. It's true; we really don't know much about this project. According to IGN, though, producer David Heyman described Rowling's script as "sublime," stating: "It's funny, it's vivid, it's exciting. It's filled with all the hallmarks of [Rowling's] incredible imagination."
