Marvel Comics is showing some big love to the Big Apple with their upcoming New York City Variants. In the special NYC covers, the Marvel Superheroes, such as Spider-Gwen, Daredevil, and Hulk take in the famous landmark sights of Central Park, Coney Island, and Staten Island.
According to The New York Post, Marvel Comics will be releasing 15 special covers featuring the most popular protagonists as they enjoy the city that never sleeps. When the covers are put together, they tell a story that is really about living in the Big Apple. The Incredible Hulk can be seen sunbathing in Central Park's Sheep Meadow. In need of a quick snack, Ant-Man orders a hot dog from one of the street cart vendors. Even the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. get involved in the action as Melinda May and Phil Coulson protect the Statue of Liberty.
Marvel Comics' editor-in-chief, Axel Alonso, explains to the Post why these heroes matter to the city's landmarks, "Superman lives in Metropolis. Batman lives in Gotham. But Spider-Man is from New York and lives in Queens. Our characters have always had an intimate relationship with the city."
For the project, Marvel reached out to various comic-book artists months in advance to start working on the latest covers. Artist Nick Bradshaw illustrated the cover for the Guardians of the Galaxy, depicting Groot and Rocket Raccoon underground trying to decide which subway to take.
Guardians of the Galaxy #20 will be the first to hit comic-book ships in May. Perfect timing too, because everything is going to change with the upcoming Secret Wars event. As we previously mentioned, the X-Men and Magneto take on the world's most powerful mutant in Age of Apocalypse #1, Peter Parker has a wife and kid in Amazing Spider-Man:Renew Your Vows #1, and Wolverine is back from the dead in Old Man Logan #1.
