Jason Alexander's George Costanza character on Seinfeld might have been a small representation of the iconic series' creator Larry David, but now the famed actor is actually being LD. It's being reported that Alexander will replace David in his Broadway play Fish in the Dark, stepping into the role of Norman Drexel this coming June 9.
The New York Times is reporting that David is leaving in the beginning of June following "tepid reviews" from a number of outlets. Of course, he's not leaving because of the reviews; in fact, we're not so sure he cares. The Curb Your Enthusiasm star-creator planned to leave the show on June 7 all along.
Alexander will step in two days later.
On leaving the stage, David notes, "I've enjoyed it, but as my mother used to say, 'Enough is enough.'" He later joked that he's certain that the "cast will be relieved to be working with a professional."
This will not be Alexander's first time stepping on the Broadway stage. In fact, it was that very place of which he called home before heading out west to take the role that would change his life – Costanza. Alexander was the lead in 1989's Jerome Robbins' Broadway, for which he won the Tony for best leading actor.
Stepping into the role, Alexander announced his excitement but assured us, "The character is not George Costanza. It's not like I can just put that slipper back on. It doesn't frighten me, but it's not a slam-dunk."
He further noted that the play has become an event. The actor wondered if the show will be a good event without LD.
"I guess we'll see," he said.
It's official! I will take over for my pal, Larry David, in his Bway hit - FISH IN THE DARK, starting June 9. Hope everyone will come.
