With all the news surrounding comedian Trevor Noah and the announcement that he'll be taking over for Daily Show host Jon Stewart once he leaves his coveted Comedy Central seat, it looks like the main thing people are asking is: Who is this guy? And, well, maybe it's okay that none of us are too aware of the South African comedian. While far from obscurity, perhaps it's not such a bad thing that the soon-to-be face of "The Best F#@king News Team Ever" isn't a household name... yet. Whenever a late night talk show host leaves their position it seems the Internet goes crazy thinking up preposterous lists that put together a group of people who "We Think Should Be..." the next host. Most of it happens within hours of the host's announcement, and most of them are absolutely ridiculous. For example, we've seen lists with the likes of Louis C.K. Amy Poehler, Amy Schumer, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, and so many more attached since Stewart's announcement. In fact, was reported that Comedy Central initially considered asking C.K., Poehler and Schumer to take over for The Daily Show.
Thankfully they didn't... because that's ridiculous.
But while these might not be the most realistic choices, the truth is that some people would love to see them fill the seat. But here's the thing: if that were to happen the series would probably be a train wreck.
Why would Tina Fey decide to take on a daily fake news show on Comedy Central? Because she anchored Weekend Update for Saturday Night Live? Why would Amy Poehler, who worked for years on SNL, Update and now Parks & Rec decide to devote the next decade of her life to hosting a show? Why in the world would Louis C.K. leave behind his FX series – which he seems to fully own and can do with it whatever he likes – to leave behind the world of stand up and host a show owned by someone else?
The truth is, while the "Who We Wish Would Take Over" lists are occasionally fun to read when they're not making us want to cave our heads in, we don't want the people on that list doing anything other than what they're already doing.
Why? Because they do it best.
We want Louis C.K. to continue with his series and keep going on the road and giving us $5 comedy specials. We want Tina Fey to continue doing what she does. We want more comedy from Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer.
Here's the scoop: Trevor Noah may not be an everyday name to the country, but the truth is the guy speaks six languages, is a hilarious stand up, appears to be both intelligent and affable and has always delivered laughs on The Daily Show... the few times we've seen him.
But most of all? The guy was picked by Jon Stewart – who we all know is not an idiot – so perhaps its time we stop thinking about these movie and TV stars in talk show positions and leave those spots open for the ones who can make the show theirs, and not just dominate them with their already established name.
Just a thought...
In the end, congrats, Trevor!
