Fearless Sentinels have been manning the Tomb of Unknowns, in spite of lashing rain and winds resulting from Hurricane Sandy 2012.
The Arlington National Cemetery has been closed as the monster storm was advancing by minute but the Sentinels belonging to US Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment, know as Old Guard, stood their ground weathering the storm.
The Old Guard keep a watch on the Tomb round the clock regardless to the weather, whether it's burning hot or freezing cold. The US Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment have guarded the Tomb of Unknowns for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year regardless of the weather, since 1948, reported ABC News.
However, the army is very unlikely to risk the life of a solider to guard the Tomb. The soldiers can go inside a room in amphitheatre nearby and continue to keep the watch on the Tomb, only in case the weather goes beyond the humanly bearable limits. But no such order had been given as of Monday afternoon, said an Associated Press report on Washington Post.
The regiment responsible for Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of Unknown has never given up manning despite the daunting climates. "Miserable is what we sign up to do as infantrymen. They do it every day, in the heat of the summer and the dead of the winter. I expect we'll be able to keep soldiers out there the whole time," USA Today quoted Capt. Owen Koch, commander of the HHC 4th Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, as saying.
Tomb of Unknowns is raised in the memory of unidentified soldiers who lost their lives during World War I for the country. The army decided to commission guard, in order to keep the civilians from picnicking on the Tomb.
