Hurricane Sandy 2012 New York, New Jersey: Power Outage Leaves Over 6 Million in Dark, 16 Dead in Storm

The destructions resulting from Hurricane Sandy was ruining quite deep into the East Coast region. The monster storm coupled with driving rain and swirling wind, which ripped through New Jersey, has left about 6 millions in dark and killed at least 16.

According to TV reports, President Obama has signed disaster declarations for New York and New Jersey. This would permit the Federal Emergency Management Agency to start coordinating all disaster relief efforts and reach out the local population those affected in storm.

News channels showed the visuals of Sandy uprooting trees, running down bridges, washing off highways and flooding the streets.

Sandy - which was reclassified as a nontropical storm because of its unusual dynamics -came ashore at 8 p.m. in Atlantic City, carrying sustained hurricane-force winds of 80 mph or more and dangerous flood tides as high as 13 feet , said the National Hurricane Center, according to Washington Post.

The New York City was locked down owing to the storm. Five New Yorkers are reportedly among 16, who died in storm. The metro service, subways were suspended due to flooding.

Sandy also hit the political circles besides the streets. The candidates, who have been running a rigours campaign in view of the forthcoming Presidential election, which is round the corner, were forced to call off their rallies. President Obama had to put off his re-election bid on hold for a while as he became busy elaborating along with federal agency over the ways to deal with the crisis.
