Walt Disney Company announced that it is acquiring Lucasfilm in a stock deal valued at $4.05 billion and has plans to make new Star Wars movies, which is currently in process.
The new Star Wars will be released in three instalments, with the first one purportedly titled Star Wars: Episode 7 in 2015, followed by other instalments.
Walt Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced that his company also planned for releasing Episode 8 and Episode 9 in coming years. "Our longterm plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years," he added, noting that the deal came with "an extensive and detailed treatment for the next three movies," he said, according to EW.Com.
Meanwhile, creator of Star Wars expressed his sheer happiness over the deal that his over three-decade-old creation is being embraced by the next generation as well.
"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime," George Lucas said in a statement, according to EW.Com.
George Lucas' first instalment of the Star Wars series, was first released in 1977 and would become a phenomenon. He is also the CEO of Lucasfilm.
Earlier, there were reports suggesting that Lucas is considering retirement and in talks with Disney over the multi-billion acquisition deal.
