'Black Girls Rock' Host Regina King Says Playing a Muslim Woman on 'American Crime' is 'Really Exciting' [WATCH]

As a director in Scandal and Being Mary Jane, actress Regina King is truly an example of black girls who rock!

MStar News reporter Star Connor spoke with King on the carpet, who also stars in the hit series American Crime, about her role in the controversial show.

King, who plays the Muslim woman named Aliyah Shadeed, said her role was an "exciting" part.

"You know what, it's really exciting. It's a very layered character, one we've never seen; a Muslim woman in Primetime, on broadcasting networks, not just as guest appearances throughout the show."

King added, "Not only is she a Muslim woman, she's a convert so it feels like she's leans a little more to the nation of Islam. So it's a lot of layers there. As an actor, and as a serious role, it's so much fun."

When it comes to having more shows like Black Girls Rock as empowerment, King says, "I think we need to have more stories told from diverse people about diverse people."

She adds, "It's something that I see the shift happening, but it could be a little more."

King continued, "There was an article that recently came out talking about people that are color are in pilots this season ... but then you look at that and it's not that many because at the end of the day, I didn't see any Asian names in there, I didn't see any Latino names in there, I didn't see any Indian names in there, so we got a long way to go."

As for King's white carpet attire, the actress and host gave credit to Tamara Mellon.

King says of her outfit, "I just loved the liquid sliver, and the way it moved. I always loved whenever I see other women wearing suits and things. I said, 'I'm going to be that boss today."'

Later, during the show itself, Regina said: "I should play you," joking with the FLOTUS, Michelle Obama, who was sitting in the audience enjoying Sunday night's show.

Some presenters and awards included: Will Smith, Tatyana Ali, Ava Duvernay, (Shot Caller Award), Jada Pinkett Smith, (Star Power Award), Cicely Tyson, (Living Legend Award) and more. Performers included, Fantasia, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway.

Janelle Monae presented the Rock Star Award to soul singer Erykah Badu, and noted that Badu was the first person to invite her on tour.

"I'm honored that you would give me this Rock Star award," Badu said told Beverly Bond, the founder of Black Girls Rock when she accepted her award.

MStars News previously reported that Star chatted up close and personal with Jill Scott, who performed Sunday night.

The songstress said of Black Girls Rock: "It means a moment to celebrate us. To really authentically celebrate us without competition, without any level of funk attached to it. We're all here celebrating each other and I love this feeling."

She added, "When I look around I'm seeing journalist. Black women journalist, and camera women, and I'm seeing makeup artist, and I'm seeing stylist, I'm seeing hair stylist and I'm looking around at all of us ... it takes a village and sometimes we don't get the jobs that we should but tonight we are."

As the BET press release stated, "Black Girls Rock celebrates the strengths, triumphs and talents of women. The much-deserving celebrants and award recipients have included legends and newcomers who continue to make strides in entertainment, corporate America and philanthropy."
