NASA released amazing photos of the mile-wide asteroid known as Asteroid 2007 PA8 drifting by the earth.  It passed by the earth between October 28th and October 30th and astronomers at the Pasadena Jet Propulsion Laboratory used a Deep Space Network Antenna to capture the views in pictures.

"The radar images of asteroid 2007 PA8 indicate that it is an elongated, irregularly shaped object approximately one mile (1.6 km) wide, with ridges and perhaps craters," an image description released by the team on Nov. 5 read. "The data also indicate that 2007 PA8 rotates very slowly, roughly once every three to four days."

The near-earth asteroid was first discovered back in 2007 at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory.  Astronomers have since tracked the asteroid along with other near-earth asteroids.

"The trajectory of asteroid 2007 PA8 is well understood," the NASA officials wrote.  "This flyby was the closest Earth approach by this asteroid for at least the next 200 years."

Currently, the asteroid poses no threat to planet earth.  However, astronomers will continue to keep their eyes open for any potential threats in the near future.  Meanwhile, you can enjoy the photos of the neighbor asteroid.
