It's being reported that iconic R&B singer Percy Sledge – who churned out the classic hit song "When a Man Loves a Woman" – has passed away at the age of 73. Sledge apparently died at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was battling a long war with cancer, and ultimately died earlier.
According to TMZ, Sledge's hit, which was apparently his debut single, topped the No. 1 spot back in 1966. It was then released yet again over in the United Kingdom in 1987. And even still, it managed to hit the No. 2 spot.
Of course, singer Michael Bolton covered the song in 1991, which also went to No. 1 and became a signature track in "over 20 movies."
The gossip site notes that alongside "When a Man Loves a Woman," Sledge had several other singles, including both "Warm and Tender and Love" and "Take Time to Know Her."
