Jeff Gordon will be fined $100,000 and docked 25 points for purposely wrecking Clint Bowyer at the Phoenix International Raceway. The four-time NASCAR champion avoided suspension, but will be placed on probation until December 31. The racer will have the opportunity to perform in the Homestead-Miami Speedway Sunday. Brian Pattie, Bowyer crew chief was fined $25,000 and placed on probation until the end of the year.
In a statement Gordon said, "I take responsibility for my actions on the racetrack. I accept NASCAR's decision and look forward to ending the season on a high note at Homestead."
Both Rick Hendrick and Alan Gustafson were penalized and docked 25 points and placed on probation as well, "I've always respected Jeff for standing his ground. We also respect that NASCAR needs to police the sport and send a message when situations like this occur. It's been a great year, and we're going to put our focus on finishing in a positive way this weekend," said Hendrick, who is the owner of Hendrick Motorsports.
Considering the matter closed, NASCAR vice President of competition said, "There's no doubt that a unique set of circumstances combined with a championship battle on the line resulted in raw emotions coming into play," he said. "We consider the penalties appropriate and those involved understand our decision and we expect them to abide by them."
Earlier in the season, Brad Keselowski was banned for using an electronic device while racing when he tweeted at the Daytona 500 during a red flag, but was fined $25,000 when he did it again during the Gordon wreck.
