It was announced earlier this month that the developers of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD were working out a spinoff for the series. If you've been watching, then you'll be pleased to find out that the current storyline in the show has everything to do with the last few episodes of this second season. According to Deadline, Adrianne Palicki will play Mockingbird and Nick Blood will play Lance Hunter.
For now, this is the only element to the show that anybody really knows about. As for internal news, SHIELD's executive producer, Jeffrey Bell, and SHIELD writer, Paul Zbyszewski, will be working on the show in some capacity. Both guys are veterans of the television game as Bell has worked with Angel and the X-Files and Zbyszewski has worked on Lost and Hawaii Five-O.
What may start as a spin-off could possibly end up replacing Agents of SHIELD altogether. The master series has yet to be renewed. Not only has SHIELD not been renewed, but the Agent Carter series which filled in for it over the winter wasn't renewed either. It's being said that it only has a 60% chance of coming back.
If that happens, it isn't exactly the worst-case scenario. The superhero television game changed entirely with Daredevil. Marvel was able to find a show runner in Netflix that allowed them complete and total control. There are no FCC policies. Standards and practices can't walk in and more importantly, there isn't a middle manager attempting to throw himself in the creative soup because he thinks he knows how to protect the show from being cancelled.
Since Agents of SHIELD is already on there, the third season could just as easily be added to Netlix in the way that Arrested Development has done. It's the perfect setup. Even Agent Carter could find its rebirth. If it doesn't work, then they could just take it down. Netflix can't really lose.
