This week's pages of the All-New X-Men #40 leaked and there's an interesting social turn in the story. One of the founding members, Ice Man, has come out as gay. This might come as a shock to some because he's been known to date a few of the female members of the mutant clan.
This isn't the original Ice Man though. All-New X-Men is a series where the X-Men of the past have become displaced and now live in the current times. The theme of the series has been watching Cyclops, Ice Man, Beast, Angel and Jean Grey come from the early 60's and adapt to the present incarnation of the tumultuous Marvel Universe.
Famed comic writer Brian Michael Bendis has been writing the series and he is the one who came up with the Ice Man coming out story. In the issue, Grey calls out Bobby Drake after he repeatedly made comments regarding the female members of the team. During their conversation, Grey, a telepath, tells him he should quit denying he's gay.
Grey also tells Drake to come out so he can stop overcompensating. During their conversation, he goes on to say that he has a thing for one of the other X-Men members. What's really interesting about the moment is that Grey reveals that the older version of Ice Man isn't gay. It just so happens that only the younger version is.
You can check out the exchange right here on the Advocate. The two members end up hugging it out at the end and Drake asks Grey if Angel is gay too because he's "too pretty."
All-New X-Men has played around with the origin stories of the displaced X-Men. For one, Beast isn't blue. The Jean Grey from the past also seems to be more powerful than the one from the future. Cyclops is pretty much the same though. He doesn't change much, ever.
