Out in five cities Friday, April 24, 2015, BLACKBIRD is the film to go see. Featuring some of your favorite stars, including Academy Award winner Mo'Nique, Isaiah Washington, and introducing Julian Walker, BLACKBIRD will have you leaving the theaters changed.
This new film is a personal, controversial, and inspiring story that introduces two up-and-coming actors, Julian Walker and Kevin Allesee. BLACKBIRD tells the story of 17-year-old Randy (Walker), a devout Christian who tries very hard to be a good person. Since his father (Washington) left, Randy takes care of his emotionally disturbed mother (Mo'Nique), sings lead in the church choir and is the kind of friend all of his classmates can depend on. As strong as he seems on the outside, Randy is hiding a secret inner struggle - a denial of his true self. It is not until he opens himself up to love that he discovers that becoming a man means accepting who you really are.
BLACKBIRD was directed by Patrik-Ian Polk, and executive produced by Sidney Hicks and Mo'Nique Hicks. Based on the novel of the same name by Larry Duplechan, this new film was produced by Keith Brown, Patrik-Ian Polk, Carol Ann Shine and Isaiah Washington. Other cast of the film includes: Terrell Tilford (Single Ladies, Guiding Light), D. Woods (MTV's Danity Kane), Gary L. Gray (The Cosby Show, Bring It On: All Or Nothing), Torrey Laamar, Kevin Allesee and Nikki Jane.
MStars News reporter, Star Connor had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Mo'Nique -yes the same lady from the UPN days, The Parkers, and Oscar-winning glory- to learn about her new role and this great new film!
Star: Talk about your character in the new film.
Mo'Nique: I play Claire Rousseau who is the mother of a son and a daughter. The daughter has been abducted and is missing for quite sometime and the son is trying to deal with his coming of age, and his sexuality. Being raised in a very strict Christian household he's always been taught to be homosexual was a sin, and a curse and your soul is condemned to "hell." He really doesn't know what to do with his feelings and his mother Claire is in a place where she doesn't really know how to bring her baby through it.
The marriage is ended because she doesn't know how to get through her daughter being abducted and drives her husband [Isaiah Washington] away.
In the film, we're talking about homosexuality and African-Americans and the church. How does everyone in the film take this situation, because there are some churches that are against homosexuality.
You know sis, there was a time I thought it was a far worse problem in the African-American community, because that was the only community that I dealt with. When we started talking this movie to the festival you began to understand it's not just the African-American community. It's the Italian community, it's the Asian community, it's the black community, it's the white community, it's every walk of life.
At the festivities all those brothers and sisters were saying, "That's my story." The moment I came out I was put out my church and they weren't just all black. I think it's a problem across the board. We're hoping when people see this movie, that it will start different conversations, and get out of conditioning and tradition.
I've followed you through your weight-loss journey, I wanted to know what are some encouraging words, or things that keep you motivated?
What keeps me going through this weight-loss journey is I look down the road to this journey. I want a lifetime with my husband, I hope that we're 100 years-old before the universe says your time is up. I hope that I am given the chance to see my children become adults and start their amazing lives, and meet their families and see my grandchildren. That's what motivates me.
Have you spoken to Lee Daniels?
I have not spoken to Mr. Daniels

How is it working with your husband, Sidney Hicks?
That journey is absolutely beautiful because my husband and I have been best friends since we were 14-years-old in the 10th grade. So it's very natural because we've always been together.
