MStars News has learned that a night that was supposed to be fun for prom attendees, ended with tragedy. According to WSB-TV, Lakeside High School teacher, Leah O'Brien was killed by two of her students in a car crash as both cars were headed to the school's prom at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History where O'Brien was going to be a chaperone.
O'Brien, 33, a family and consumer science teacher at Lakeside High, was killed in the crash and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, Her 8-year-old daughter that was also in the accident remains listed in serious condition.
The 19-year-old and 18-year-old teens involved in the crash were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and were on their way to the schools prom as well.
The school's Principal, Jason Clyne revealed that the 33-year-old educator was part of the teacher development program, which is focused on students who want to became teachers one day.
"She built that program up from a small, two or three kids interested in it, to a thriving program because of her energy and enthusiasm and her passion for education," Clyne explained.
Grief counselors were set up at the High School for students to mourn the loss of their beloved teacher.
A sign located at the school read: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Ms. Leah O'Brien. The entire Viking nation is mourning the loss of one of our best."
Darnyl Katzinger, who was at the scene of the crash, said the two students "were very distraught."
"Both of them kept repeating 'why did she have to pull out in front of us?'" she added.
"The more interesting fact: Ms. O'Brien was a FCCLA chairperson. She sponsored that club. These kids were both in that club," the principal noted.
No word on Funeral plans have been revealed at this time.
