You may never have heard of Glu Mobile but they are one of the most lucrative gaming developers around today. The platform made over $100 million with their Kim Kardashian: Hollywood game. Today they're setting their sights on another entertainment icon. They hope to have the same success with Britney Spears as the publisher signed Spears to an eight-year licensing deal. The company now has the ability to use her likeness and voice.
Glu's chief executive Niccolo de Masi says the game will focus on two facets of Spears' life. Gamers will follow her from her early beginnings with "Oops I Did it Again" and then they'll get a taste of her latest Las Vegas comeback. The not-so-pretty years in between have been excluded.
"People like Britney Spears obviously have been successful for more than a decade. They have brand recognition and social following everywhere: not just developed nations but also emerging markets," de Mesi says. "We can use our partnership with her to expand not only amongst the casual demographic, but also to try and bring new people into gaming that have never played a game before."
If this game is anything like Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, Glu Mobile is going to have another cash cow on deck. Released in June 2014 on Android and iOS platforms, Hollywood made $74.3 million for all of 2014 and 21.3 million by the end of 2015.
Glu Mobile has a bright future in the gaming industry. Not only have they inked Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears, they also have a partnership with Katy Perry. Her game is coming out by the end of 2016 and de Masi says there is more than enough room for more than one pop star on the roster. On top of that Chinese Internet invester Tencent has invested $126 million to have a 14.6% stake in the company.
