A 140 vehicle pile up in Beaumont, Texas has left two people dead and 80 people injured. The collision was caused by extremely foggy conditions around 8:45 a.m. on Thanksgiving day on Interstate 10.
According to Jefferson County sheriff's Deputy Rod Carroll, 80 to 90 people were transported hospitals. At least 10 to 12 people were in critical condition. According to KFDM-TV a man and woman were killed in a Chevy Suburban SUV after being crushed by a tractor trailer
The Associated press reported that Carroll did not know he was dealing with multiple crashes because of the thick fog,"It is catastrophic," Carroll said. "I've got cars on top of cars." After eight hours the eastbound lanes on I-10 were re-opened.
Many uninjured driver-thankful for their safety-tried to help authorities with injured drivers, "It's just people helping people," Carroll said. "The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured."
