The Season 4 finale of Person of Interest aired on CBS. Twitter had lots to say as Finch (Michael Emerson), Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Root (Amy Acker) went out in a blaze of glory as the heated battle between two Artificial Intelligences, Samaritan and The Machine, took a shocking twist.
In our previous recap, Team Machine found themselves in two different wars. Reese and Elias (Enrico Colantoni) were both captured by rival, Dominic (Winston Duke). While Shaw was being taken to a different location, Root (Amy Acker) and Finch found themselves trapped in Samaritan's base. In order to save them, the Machine gave up its location to Greer (Joh Nolan).
In our recent recap, Fusco arrived in the kick of time with the calvary and arrested Dominic and Elias. While Control's men were looking to prevent the bombing of the Supreme Court, Root and Finch discovered the Machine was dying. In order to save the Machine, Finch had to download his program into a portable computer, inside a briefcase. Time was running out as Team Machine was trapped inside, surrounded by Samaritan's agents.
In the closing minutes, Root realized they had two clips left and their briefcase was running low on double AA batteries. As Samaritan's agents took out Elias and Dominic, Greer's men put a bag over Control (Camryn Manheim)'s face and took her hostage. As Pink Floyd's Welcome to the Machine started playing, Finch walked out, with no gun, alongside Reese and Root as they started shooting at Samaritan's agents.
In an interview with IGN, co-showrunner Greg Plageman discusses the cliff-hanger, "Well, Samaritan's not easily defeated. [laughs] I think the thing you take away is that the triumph for our guys here is that their backs were against the wall and they managed, together, to save the Machine. And I think what that sets us up for, in a really fantastic way, is how are our guys going to possibly reconstitute the Machine? How is Harold Finch going to go about bringing his Machine back to life? Not even just with it perceiving numbers, but what powers does he want it to have going into next season? We think that's a really interesting dilemma."
