The Season 3 of the crime thriller, The Following, meets its series finale on Fox with Episode 13, The Reckoning. Haunted by the death of his friend, Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), will Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) be able to take down Theo (Michael Ealy) or will he meet his own demise?
As we previously mentioned, after chasing him down and putting an end to his followers, Hardy (Bacon) witnessed the execution of his nemesis and closest ally, Carroll (Purefoy). With the news of fatherhood on the way, Ryan has to sober up and find a way to regain his lost sanity. After killing Theo's sister though, Ryan has an enemy who will not give up until his vendetta is fulfilled.
5) The Flashbacks
In the first season, we were introduced to ex-FBI agent Hardy (Bacon), the notorious serial killer Carroll (Purefoy) and his murderous cult. Because he caught him once red-handed, Hardy thought he could do it again. Thanks to Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson, the first season took experiments with its storytelling using the flashback techniques, which were the best parts.
4) Those Kill Scenes
Remember in the first season, Emma (Valorie Curry) and Paul (Adan Canto), who were drenched in blood, invited Jacob (Nico Tortorella) into the shower with them. What a wired way to jump right into a threesome! Pushing the boundaries on TV rating, hitting close to that TV-MA mark, the show had a crazy way of mixing sex and death into their storylines.
3) No More Big Bads
This third season, we had Almost Human actor Michael Ealy as the calculating and vengeful Theo. Because this critic is a huge fan her work on The Americans, I wish Annet Mahendru was brought in sooner, before the final two episodes. I was certainly hoping she would be a major player if a fourth season was granted. Mark/Luke was more of a henchmen but kudos for Sam Underwood for trying to make him a major threat.
2) No More Mike And Max
Who else thought Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore) was going to die in the first season? Every season afterwards, this critic thought he was living on borrowed time. Will they kill him off finally or will Mike finally be reunited with Max (Jessica Stroup)?
1) No More Poe References
Poor Carroll, the Edgar Allan Poe fanatic, who never got to finish his follow-up novel. He never got to prove that he was more than a hack. Was the show already over when they killed off Carroll midway in the third season? Because there's no fourth season, we'll never know I suppose. Watching Bacon and Purefoy as their counterparts definitely made the show must-see TV.
The Following continues one more time on Fox Monday at 9 pm.
