President Barack Obama's second term may be beneficial to his uncle who was ordered to be deported three times in twenty years. Onyango Obama, was granted a hearing to plead his case in front of the Board of Immigration Appeals.
According to the Boston Globe, Onyango claims that his previous lawyer was ineffective when representing him in his case and was ordered to return to Kenya. During his arrest for driving drunk last year, police found out that he had violations against him ordering him to leave the country. When addressed by the officers, Onyango said, "I think I'll call the White House."
According to the Boston Globe, executive director of the Washington-based American Immigration Lawyers Association, Crystal Williams said, "With an outstanding order and a legally fuzzy plea, it's pretty unusual for the board to reopen" Williams added, "It's not unheard of, but it's pretty unusual."
Onyango arrived to Massachusetts at 17 to study at Cambridge and was to return to his country on Dec. 24, 1970. Although a relative of the President, special treatment may have been given to him eve though the President wasn't really close to his paternal side. Federation for American ImmigrationReform spokesman, Ira Mehlman said, "He would seem to fit the criteria of someone we would want to remove," Mehlman added, "And yet even in this case the system bends to his will and he gets another hearing."
Wouldn't we all like perks?
