A new Kickstarter has been put in place to fund a documentary set to highlight a world that lives within the walls of Pokemon's fandom. To Be the Very Best is a feature-length documentary about the world's most renowned Pokemon players who are the best in the world in their respective tournaments. The documentary's creator is Wolfe Gilck and one of his partners is Dan Karlock. Karlock is a 2-time Emmy Award winning director. Matt Weaver, another producer, has won awards for Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Rock of Ages.
Glick says on his Kickstarter that he wants to "capture" every aspect of Pokemon's global community.
"With some help, my team and I will be there to capture every moment: from the roar of the crowd, the elation of victory, and the heartbreak of defeat to what draws us back to the event each year - the global community of close friends that would have never come to be without Pokemon," he states.
On the Kickstarter page, Glick broke down the total expenses needed to fund the film. For 13 days, those working on the project will need help with paying for cameras, lighting, sound, editing, transcription and finding songs for the soundtrack. They'll also need funding for travel and lodging in Indianapolis and Boston. Altogether they'll need $50,050 and so far they have $7,337 pledged with just 21 days to go.
Those who pledge $75 or more will be rewarded with an exclusive t-shirt. A $100 pledge gets you an awkward calendar. $120 gets you a t-shirt and name in the credits while $30 more gets you a personalized voicemail. $10,000 gets you a dinner with the producers in New York City. Of course, the coolest prize in all this is the $5,000 prize which lands you as the film's associate producer.
Glick is hoping the film will be released in December 2016.
