It's being reported that a bartender in France has been charged with manslaughter after a man he served 56 shots to died the next day. The 56-year-old drink inhaler, Renaud Prudhomme, reportedly drank the 56 shots back in October 2014 in an attempt to beat some sort of record at Le Starter bar and restaurant.
Reports from The Huffington Post note that Prudhomme's daughter claims that the bartender, Gilles Crepin, encouraged her father to drink the 56 shots, which were part of a drinking contest. The first 30 were downed in about one minute, according to The Telegraph. That, for the record, amounts to about one liter of alcohol.
After the contest, Prudhomme's daughter brought him home but then took him to the hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest and died the very next day.
"It's a decision guided by emotion and the unconscious desire to set an example," Crepin's lawyer, Renaud Portejoie, told the BBC. "We can't ask every customer who buys alcohol to present their medical certificates."
Portejoie plans to appeal the court's decision.
