Kanye West shocked fans with his bold fashion choice at the "12-12-12: The Concert For Sandy Relief" on Wednesday, Dec. 12.
West, 33, wore a black leather pleated skirt and black leather jeans onstage as he performed a medley of hits including "Clique," "Touch The Sky" and "Gold Digger." The pleated leather kilt, designed by Givenchy, became such a hot topic on social media websites that fans created not one, but four Twitter accounts dedicated to it: @kanyeskirt @kanyeskilt @kanyesskirt @kanyekilt. "Why is Kanye" and "#leatherskirt" also began trending instantaneously.
West's girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, gave it thumbs up and tweeted, "Awwwwwwww I'm so excited right now!!!!! He looks so cute!!"
A fan agreed with Kardashain and tweeted, "I love that @kanyewest went from pink popped collars to leggings and kilts in 10 years and he's still on top of the game."
One celebrity remained neutral on the subject but tweeted a lighthearted comment: "Ok I admit it. I let kanye borrow my skirt," actor Jared Leto wrote.
The fashion choice was criticized by another rapper, Harlem native Cam'ron: "Pyrex [hoodie] and a skirt? Shit ain't adding up. And if u co-sign this I'm blocking u . Ima have to save us," he reportedly wrote on Instagram but then later deleted the message.
West joined a list of performers for Wednesday night's benefit concert including The Who, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen.
Criticism regarding West's outfit continued online:
"Kanye must have swapped suitcases with Kim Kardashian."
"'Wear this black trash bag as a skirt. Then, just kinda run around the stage scaring white people' - Kanye West's manager before the show."
"Maybe a new item from the Kardashian collection?"
West wore a leather skirt onstage during several nights of his "Watch the Throne" tour with Jay-Z.
In April, he shocked concertgoers at the Coachella music festival when he wore another women's item for his performance. West wore a colorful woman's print blouse from French luxury fashion house Celine with a pair of men's jeans. New York Daily News ran the photo of him wearing the top alongside the image of a female model wearing it, an photo from the French fashion designer's look book.
"12-12-12 Concert" was held to benefit the Robin Hood Fund for Hurricane Sandy victims. Alicia Keys, Coldplay's Chris Martin, and Paul McCartney were just some of the notable acts that performed. Keys closed the show with her hit "Empire State of Mind."
