In a non-title bout Showtime "Shawn" Porter beat Adrien "The Problem" Broner in a unanimous decision. Despite the bout being so one-sided for most of it, Broner went all out in the 12th round and nearly beat Porter with a wide-open left hand a minute in. This lead to a late knockdown by Broner but Porter quickly got up and smiled it off. While the shot was a hard one Porter survived the fall and was announced the winner in the non-title bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
In my opinion, it looks like the only reason Porter even got back up was because of awesome conditioning. You don't get up from a punch without it.
Everyone in the crowd of 8,138 was impressed by Porter's win and maybe nobody was more impressed than the card's co-promoter Floyd Mayweather. In the fight Porter landed 149 of 590 punches while Broner connected 88 of 309 punches. The judge's scores in the end were 114-112, 115-111 and 118-108.
Porter called the win an intelligent one.
"That's how you beat a great fighter intelligently," Porter said in the post-fight interview. "We did everything we needed to do in preparation for this fight, and coming out we wanted to establish our jab and establish that we are the better boxer. I think we did that over the course of the fight."
Despite losing Broner was okay with the decision. He said so in his post-fight interview.
"Listen, I still will fight anybody. It don't matter, man. I'm a real animal. I'm an animal," said Broner, a former three-division titleholder. "This time I didn't get the decision, but it's OK. At the end of the day, everybody in here will take my autograph and take my picture."
Both Porter and Broner were fights but going into the fight Broner's constant trash talking put a strain on their relationship. On one occasion, Broner said he would talk Porter's wife out to dinner.
