De'Andre Johnson was on top of the world as the Florida State Seminoles quarterback. He made such a mark with the team, he was dubbed "Mr. Football." However, yesterday when a month-old video surfaced of the FSU player punching a woman in a Tallahassee bar after she swung at him first, coach Jimbo Fisher dismissed Johnson. The video had apparently been released by Florida's state attorneys.
You can watch the video here:
Johnson and his family have hired prominent criminal defense and trial attorney, Jose Baez. You'll remember Baez as the lawyer who obtained an acquittal in the Casey Anthony murder trial. Baez argues that Johnson was not the aggressor in the fight.
"While it is clear from the video that De'Andre Johnson was not the initial aggressor, his family wants to take the lead in helping him learn and grow from this experience," Baez said Monday in a statement. "De'Andre is extremely embarrassed by this situation and would like to express his heartfelt apologies to everyone, including those who were directly affected, Coach Fisher and his teammates, the entire Florida State University community, as well as his family and friends."
In the Tallahassee footage, Johnson was trying to get up to the bar, presumably to order a drink, and it's a tight squeeze to get in next to a female already standing there. As he gets in place next to the blonde, the video shows the woman turn toward Johnson and raise her right arm up, balling her hand up into a fist while she looks to be yelling. The unnamed female then swings at him with her left arm. It was at this point that Johnson punched her in the face.
Last season, Johnson was ranked the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback as a senior. He passed for 3,710 yards and 47 touchdowns while running for 398 yards and nine scores. Back in high school, he led First Coast High to a 12-1 record. He finished with 11,697 yards.
