Yes, that is really Tom Cruise, arguably the biggest movie star in the world, hanging off of a huge plane as it takes off in the film's intense sequence. His only forms of safety were protective contact lenses and a rope attaching him to the plane-just one single rope.
Though we've seen him talk about stunts before, this new behind-the-scenes footage shows Cruise talking about how terrified he was about actually filming the scene. Apparently, Cruise didn't sleep much the night before and had to deal with that while getting ready for the important sequence.
We know that this scene is big for the film's marketing side of things, but we assume it's very important for the story since they risked Cruise's life once again to get it! It turns out they took eight takes of it, too.
