WWE will present its Battleground pay-per-view on Sunday, and the main event features Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. So without further ado, let's get to the full match card and offer up our predictions for the show.
R-Truth vs. King Barrett for Barrett's King of the Ring Crown (Pre-Show)
I wish I were joking, but this is actually happening. I tend not to get upset when we get matches like this, because at least we're getting to see these guys compete somewhere on the card. R-Truth is entertaining, and Barrett is always solid in the ring. But this match has happened every week for what feels like a month, and I just can't care.
Winner: R-Truth
Randy Orton vs. Sheamus
We've seen this match far too many times, but I'm actually looking forward to it this Sunday. It gives Orton a reason to be on the card, and gives Sheamus something to do other than hold onto the Money in the Bank briefcase and threaten to cash it in and anger all of us. Orton doesn't need the win, and Sheamus will probably get it because he has the case.
Winner: Sheamus
The Prime Time Players (c) vs. The New Day for the WWE Tag Team Championship
This is a fun feud between two teams loaded with charisma. The New Day continues to entertain, thanks in large part to the antics of Xavier Woods. Meanwhile, Titus O'Neil's work on commentary has added a new dimension to the Prime Time Players. Honestly, either team could win and I'd be fine with it. I'd even be fine if these teams played hot potato with the title for a while. But, in this case...
Winner: The Prime Time Players
Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt
Bray Wyatt has played mind games with Roman Reigns for weeks. In fact, this was the first announced match for Battleground. Wyatt used Reigns' daughter to distract and disorient him, and for the most part, it worked. Reigns regained his focus on Monday Night Raw and brutally attacked Wyatt before his scheduled match with Dean Ambrose. Wyatt needs the win here more than Reigns, but as is always the case with Bray, that doesn't mean he's going to get it.
Winner: Roman Reigns
John Cena (c) vs. Kevin Owens for the United States Championship
Here we have the first of two matches where I might as well just flip a coin to pick the winner, because I truly have no idea what's going to happen. And that's a wonderful thing.
Let's assume these two are going to fight again, possibly for the final time, at Summerslam. In that case, this match could go any number of ways. Cena could retain, and Owens could win the belt at Summerslam. Or, Owens could win here and lose it at Summerslam. Or he could win both. Or Cena could win both. Or Cena could retain by disqualification here. Do you see?! Any of these things could happen and I wouldn't be surprised at all.
It would make the most sense, I think, for Owens to win here and then have Cena get the belt back next month. So let's roll with that.
And I didn't even mention Cesaro, who has basically become part of this feud now!
Winner (and new champion): Kevin Owens
Seth Rollins (c) vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
For weeks, I assumed Lesnar would tear through Rollins with ease in this match. Then, I thought the Authority would pull some shenanigans to help Rollins retain. Then, with J&J Security and Kane out of commission, I thought Lesnar would dominate. But then Rollins cut that fantastic promo at the end of Raw and I believed, for a moment, that he might actually beat Lesnar, which is a feat unto itself.
Because Rollins is now desperate. He's completely unhinged. Lesnar took out his entire support structure. And everyone has been saying for months that Rollins can't beat anyone without his cronies, much less Brock Lesnar. But now...maybe he can? Maybe he's been pushed enough to do the unthinkable and beat Lesnar cleanly? You know what? I'M CALLING THE UPSET! LET'S DO IT! (Note that I'm making this pick almost purely because I believe the WWE refuses to change its pattern that the title can only change hands at WrestleMania and Summerslam. I'm hyped for this pay-per-view, but...it's Battleground for goodness sake.)
Winner: Seth Rollins
WWE.com announced on Wednesday that Ryback is injured and will not be able to defend the Intercontinental Championship against Big Show and Miz as scheduled. Could we get a No. 1 Contender's match instead?
Rumors are also circulating that Dean Ambrose will be involved in this show somehow even though he doesn't have a place on the card. And another rumor is out there that...The Undertaker might show up to build a match at Summerslam?!
