Director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chris Columbus recently expressed an interest in collaborating with J.K. Rowling again and directing yet another Harry Potter film! Columbus said that back in 2002 he would have loved to stay on and direct the entire series of movies but was concerned that it would take him away from his family for too long. He recently visited Entertainment Weekly Radio (SiriusXM channel 105) where he explained to the station that he doesn't want to do a spin-off like the upcoming film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them even though he says, "It's going to be fantastic, I'm sure." He says he is curious to know (much like a lot of HP fans) what happened to Harry, Ron and Hermione in between the time they defeated Voldemort and his followers and the epilogue that is both in the final film and the 7th book. Columbus adds that there's 18 years of a time gap and that he really wants to know "what's in [Rowling's] head" for those characters during that time period. When prompted he also mentions that he doesn't have the courage to address this to Rowling and that he respects what she's doing but that he would love to do it and see what that story might be like.
Right now, J.K. Rowling is appeasing Harry Potter fans by writing a new story for the Harry Potter franchise called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. However, it won't be appearing in a new book or film, but on the stage! Rowling announced it herself via Twitter back at the end of June this year, saying, "I'm also very excited to confirm today that a new play called Harry Potter and the #CursedChild will be opening in London next year."
It would be safe to say that it would be amazing to see those missing years, but as of right now it is merely a dream of Columbus and HP fans for more movies. Let's look forward to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in the meantime! Check out the podcast of Chris Columbus here:
