An upcoming release for Walt Disney Studios is the live-action adaptation of their 1963 animated film, The Sword and the Stone. Disney has recently been producing live-action adaptations of their earlier animated classics, the most recent being Cinderella, which was directed by Kenneth Branaugh this past spring, and Malificent (starring Angelina Jolie) last year. Disney plans to continue to bring back many favorites as well as creating new stories.
The original cartoon produced by Disney was a very loose adaptation of T.B. White's novel about the rise of King Arthur in Camelot. The company had the story take place in London instead and introduced us to a quirky villain in Madame Mim as well as having fun with a lot of animal transfiguration.
The Guardian reports, "The Sword in the Stone also continues the big screen renaissance of Arthur himself. British director Guy Ritchie is due to release Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, which studio Warner Bros hopes will kick off a series of six new movies, in July 2016. The film stars Charlie Hunnam as Arthur, Jude Law as Vortigen, Eric Bana as Uther Pendragon, and according to some reports, footballer David Beckham as a grumpy knight who is unable to pull Excalibur from the stone."
Playbill reports, "Other live-action movies include Mulan, with a new script by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek; The Night on Bald Mountain sequence from Fantasia, written and executive-produced by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless; Beauty and the Beast, featuring a cast including Audra McDonald, Emma Watson and Josh Gad, The Jungle Book, featuring a voice cast including Christopher Walken and Scarlett Johansson; Dumbo directed by Tim Burton; and Tink, starring Reese Witherspoon as Tinker Bell."
The film is just one of the many exciting productions to follow its predecessors in the near future. Let's keep our eyes peeled for trailers and more news from Disney!
