Surgeon Left 16 Items In Body: Dirk Schroeder Suffered 'appalling agony' After Prostate Cancer Surgery, German Family Seeks £80,000

Surgeons left 16 different items inside a 74-year-old man's body. Dirk Schroeder suffered from 'appalling agony' during a surgical procedure for prostate cancer.

The surgeon left a needle, roll of bandage, compress, and a piece of a surgical mask after the surgery in 2009 and now the family is asking for £80,000 ($128,304.00) in damages and gross negligence.

Schroeder was told that he would live six years after the surgery, but he returned back to the Hanover hospital in pain when nurses discovered, a needle, a six-inch roll of bandage, a six-inch long compress, several swabs and a fragment of surgical mask.

 The patient succumbed from the spread of cancer in 2012 and now his family is seeking compensation the family lawyer and medical expert Annette Corinth says, "Such an extent of foreign objects left inside a patient is unique in medical literature." The attorney added, "I hope the hospital will settle but otherwise the family are prepared to go all the way and sue in court. The family of the deceased spent lots of money on care, medicines and reconstruction of their home to look after this man. There has been gross negligence here which most probably had led to complications and possibly a quicker death."
