Dozens of people are injured after a head-on train collision in Austria. The AFP is reporting that five people have been seriously injured and two people are in critical condition.
Ronald Packert an Emergency services spokesman said, "Two of the seriously injured are in a life-threatening condition, one of whom is one of the train drivers ... In total 41 people were hurt."
The two trains crashed during rush hour this morning were both packed with passengers. Packert says that thankfully the train's unfortunate accident happened near an emergency station, "One good thing was that the crash happened right next to an emergency services station, meaning that our people were there in seconds."
Although, Packert's team arrived within seconds, it still took two hours to evacuate all the passengers.
According to Channel News Asia, Sarah Nettel, an Austrian Railways spokeswoman said, "There was a technical problem. One of the trains received a signal to proceed that it shouldn't have."
According to Reuters, human error has not been ruled out as a possible cause of crash. Operations on the line had been switched to manual following a technical defect with a shunting switch."
An investigation will proceed after all the passengers are taken care of.
