This has been a big week for Arrow casting news and one piece of that was the news that True Blood and Hannibal alum, Rutina Wesley, has joined the cast for Season 4 in a recurring role. Now, more details about her part have been revealed.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Wesley will play Liza Warner. If that name is not familiar to you, then don't worry. Warner is a pretty obscure character from the DC Comics in the 1970s known as...wait for it...Lady Cop. Yes, really! Her character was essentially a female cop who solved crimes.
However, Wesley's role on Arrow will be far more substantial, according to EW. "Arrow’s spin on the character is said to be surprisingly different as she will be a member of the anti-vigilante task force," the site notes.
So it seems that the Starling City Police Department will not be too happy with Oliver Queen's return to his hometown as the Green Arrow, given that there's an anti-vigilante task force up and running. Wesley's character will likely be a foil for Ollie, but could there be something deeper brewing? Perhaps some connection to Oliver's past?
Wesley joins a slew of new cast members for Season 4 that have been announced in recent weeks. These include Jimmy Akingbola as Baron Reiter, Neal McDonough as Damien Darhk, Alexander Calvert as Anarky, Echo Kellum as Mister Terrific, Falk Hentschel as Hawkman and Casper Crump as Vandal Savage.
Perhaps the most interesting addition to the entire show this season is the one-time guest appearance of Matt Ryan as John Constantine.
In the trailer for DC's Legends of Tomorrow, we see Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) emerge from the Lazarus Pit, the healing fountain introduced in Season 3 of Arrow that has the power to mend wounds and even bring people back to life. From the trailer, it seemed that this would be how Sara returns as White Canary, but executive producer Marc Guggenheim has now teased that Constantine's appearance is connected to that.
"Unlike Thea, who wasn't fully dead, the consequences of using the pit on someone as dead as Sara was creates some unforeseen difficulties," he said, according to TV Insider. "And John Constantine is uniquely suited to help our team deal with those."
Interestingly, it seems that Oliver is the one who feels most at ease with this entire supernatural element. "If you go back and rewatch Season 3, he refers to having some experience with the mystical," Guggenheim said. "Oliver knows that the world is a larger place than most people think. So the team will have one reaction, but Oliver will have more of an experienced reaction."
