Coca Cola released their advertisement for the 2013 Superbowl and have already received criticism from the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee for the racist context of the commercial. The Superbowl is known for having the most anticipated commercials aired during the game, so all eyes are already on such a huge company like Coca Cola. With the Superbowl only days away, coming under heat for discrimination this close to the kick off does not bode well for the soda company.
The commercial opens on a desert, immediately revealing an Arab man leading a camel through the dismal terrain to a giant Coke bottle. Others, including cowboys, a "road warrior" type group, and a bus full of Las Vegas show girls, join him and begin a race to the popular bevarage. Coca Cola has even created a contest around the commercial, allowing viewers to vote for a winner and enter to win prizes. After seeing this, the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee spoke out against what they considered to be a stereotypical depiction of an Arab man. It is true that, in numerous advertisements and other sources of media, Arab people are depicted in very stereotypical ways ranging from sheiks, belly-dancers and even terrorists. The Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee has asked Coca Cola to fix this racist commercial before the Superbowl this Sunday, February 3.
The strange thing is that this whole issue could have been avoided by a simple rewrite of the commercial. The cowboys, "road warriors," and Las Vegas showgirls featured in the advertisement are two pretty diverse groups. It is kind of strange that this man is the only "racer" that is a lone in the advertisement. Why not have this Arab man be a treasure-hunter or something like that and give him an entourage as well. That way the commercial consists of 4 groups all racing for the bottle of coke. The commercial keeps its main theme and loses the racism! I think it might be a little too late to make such huge changes to the advertisement, but I am just trying to help, Coke. Here is the controversial commercial:
Another commercial coming under discrimination heat is this year's Superbowl advertisement from Volkswagen. This commercial depicts a white man speaking in a heavy Jamaican accent, which is clearly meant to be funny but some are taking it as enforcing a stereotype. Volkswagen plans on to air this commercial when the Baltimore Ravens take on the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday, at Superbowl XLVII. No word from Coca Cola on the company's stance on changing or keeping the above advertisement for the game.
