Written by Christopher McQuarrie (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation) and directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men), their crime thriller movie took Hollywood by storm. The unforgettable image that became the logo for Bad Hat Harry Productions, Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollak, Kevin Spacey are The Usual Suspects.
As the film celebrates its 20th Anniversary, Verbal Kint (Spacey) warns the federal agent (Chazz Palminteri )that the Devil came to see him and his name is Keyser Soze. Playing them behind-the-scenes, the legendary crime lord put together a crew to hold a multi-million dollar heist. But what was really going on as the heist ended with an explosion and few survivors?
We have 5 reasons why we love The Usual Suspects:
5) What Is He Saying?
Did you know Fenster was supposed to be played by an older actor, like in his 50s? Because the crew went younger, Del Toro had an idea for his role. Del Toro wanted Fenster to have a mumbly, unintelligible accent, which both the screenwriter and director approved.
4) The Ensemble Cast
According to Zimbio, Singer and McQuarrie originally wanted the famous police lineup scene to be dramatically tense. The group of five (Spacey, Baldwin, Pollak, Del Toro, and Gabriel Byrne) messed up their lines take after take and couldn't stop laughing on the set. According to Pollak, Del Toro "farted 12 takes in a row" and no one could hold it together; having a bad case of the giggles.
3) Before He Was Frank Underwood
We all know the recognizable House of Cards by face and name now, but back then, in the 90s, no one knew who Kevin Spacey was; expect for hardcore Wiseguy TV fans. But his role got Spacey nominated by the Academy for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. This is the reason why Spacey and Singer would reunite later on for Superman Returns.
2) Even He Doesn't Know Who's Keyser Soze!
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the X-Men: Apocalypse director reveals what's part of the story is real and fall testimony, "Well, I believe Keyser Söze was Kevin Spacey because the sketch artist does a sketch of him, so at least that is true. The sketch artist was played by the now mother of my son, I'm just realizing that now, and my mother played the woman at the police station receiving the sketch. Wow, those memories - first time my mom ever saw me on a set. But yeah, that moment clarified it for me, the moment of the fax. The visual reveal of the sketch being Keyser Söze is what cinches it for me, but pretty much everything else is up for debate."
1) That Ending!
Described by Flavorwire as one of the best twist endings in cinematic history, the most-talked about scene was spoofed in Scary Movie and copied in so many knockoff movies. It's not a twist thrown in there; it actually gives the movie repeat viewings.
The Usual Suspects is out on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Readers, what do you think of the movie's 20th anniversary?
