In honor of the Baltimore Ravens taking on the San Francisco 49ers in the 47th annual Super Bowl game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans (Sunday, Feb. 3), here are some fun facts and trivia about the upcoming "most-watched televised broadcast in the world." - Super Bowl XLVII is the first time in professional sports history that siblings will play each other... John Harbaugh coaches the Ravens and will face off against younger bro Jim Harbaugh, coach of the 49ers. The game has been nicknamed Harbaugh Bowl, HarBowl, Super Baugh, and Brother Bowl.
- New Orleans has already hosted a whopping nine Super Bowl games, an NFL record (and currently tied with the Miami-city area). This will be the first Super Bowl held since the Superdome sustained damages from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and since naming rights were sold to Mercedes-Benz.
- Heading into the 2013 game, the 49ers are 5-0 in Super Bowls and the Ravens are 1-0 in Super Bowl wins.
- This will mark the first Super Bowl in which both of the teams have appeared in, but not yet lost, a previous Super Bowl... the winner will become the only remaining team in the NFL to have appeared in multiple Super Bowls without losing one.
- Baltimore finished the 2012 regular season 10-6, while San Fran finished off the season with a 11-4-1 record.
- Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis (no. 52) was named MVP in Super Bowl XXXV... Lewis announced that Super Bowl XLVII will be his last game before retiring from the NFL.
- According to statistics, the 2012 Super Bowl game averaged over 111 million viewers in the United States alone. About 160 million people in approximately 200 countries are expected to watch the game this Sunday.
- Puppy Bowl IX will take place before the game from 3-5 p.m. on Animal Planet. Over 60 dogs will take place in the mock football face-off, and the broadcast will offer information on how viewers can adopt rescued puppies and help their local animal shelters. The network will even employ a kiss cam, water-bowl cam, hamster pilots in a "blimp," and a halftime show involving kittens.
- The 49ers are officially considered the home team and will "host" the game (despite San Fran being approximately 2,300 miles away from New Orleans). Baltimore is only about 1,100 miles away.
- Grammy Award winners Alicia Keys and Beyonce Knowles will provide Super Bowl entertainment... with Keys singing the National Anthem and Beyonce performing a grand Pepsi-sponsored Halftime Show.
- Some highly-coveted 30-second ad spots aired during the Super Bowl game currently cost a staggering $4 million.
- San Fran's mascot is Sourdough Sam, while the Ravens are represented by Poe the Raven (named after the city's infamous author Edgar Allan Poe and his gothic narrative poem "The Raven").
- Tickets for the 2013 Super Bowl were selling for an average $800-$1,200 each... face value.
- The winner of the game will receive the prestigious Vince Lombardi Trophy... a Tiffany-made football that weighs approximately 7 pounds and is worth $25,000.
- San Francisco is favored to win the game by about 3.5 points with an over/under at 48 (in order to bet the over/under, choose whether the teams combined will score more or less than 48 points).
CBS will air Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, Feb. 3 with kickoff starting at 6:30 p.m. E.T. Pre-game events begin at 1 p.m. and go until 5 p.m., when the "Super Bowl Kick Off Show" officially begins.
