Rappers Fabolous and LL Cool J have signed on to host World Star Hip Hop's 3rd annual back-to-school giveaway in Jamaica, Queens. Both hip-hop veterans are New York natives, with Cool J having grown up and started his career in the Queens neighborhood back in the 1980’s.
The two are set to take on hosting duties while volunteers work to hand out over 1,600 backpacks to school students at the local Colosseum Mall. The backpack giveaway will be taking place in Jamaica this Saturday, Aug. 30, and the rappers will also be joined by MC Erick Sermon, as well as MC Jayla Marie.
The backpack giveaway has reportedly been able to hand out over 2,500 backpacks to underprivileged children, as well as tons of school supplies. It’s also said that this year will have other prizes for participants, iPads, eReaders, as well as gift cards from Barnes & Noble, Target and Amazon.
In previous years, World Star Hip Hop has recruited the likes of rappers French Montana and Jim Jones to be hosts for the annual event. The CEO of the popular video website, Leo “Q” O’Denat, did not finish school, which has inspired him to start this educational supply giveaway in order to motivate children to stay in school.

Both LL Cool J and Fabolous have been majorly essential artists within the hip-hop culture for multiple decades, with Cool J getting his start after signing to Russell Simmons’ Def Jam as one of the first artists back in 1984. Fabolous got his start by rapping on the radio show of DJ Clue for Hot 97 at the time in 1998, who later signed the Brooklyn rapper to his Desert Storm label.
Both rappers have been staples for keeping New York City’s hip-hop sound relevant within the city over the years.
