If you're a fan of turkey bacon, you might want to hold off for a little bit and switch to either: A) another type of turkey bacon, or B) fry up some old-fashioned pig. It's being reported that the Oscar Mayer parent company, Kraft Heinz, has recalled 2 million pounds of turkey bacon. Which totals out to 84,000 cases of meat.
Per a report from The Huffington Post, the recall all came down to the fact that there were complaints of illnesses due to the "consumption of these products," a statement from the Food Safety and Inspection Service read.
And if you think you're in the clear because of the "best by" date, well, that might actually be why people are getting sick – as the bacon is spoiling on that day.
Oh boy. Yeah... sorry.
From the report, the following packages of turkey bacon were recalled:
- 4-pack (56 oz.) size of Oscar Mayer Selects Uncured Turkey Bacon
- 3-pack (36 oz.) size of Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon
- 4-pack (48 oz.) size of Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon
Yep, that's a lot of turkey bacon.
For more details regarding which packages have been recalled, head on over to The Huffington Post.
Kraft Heinz Company spokesperson Michael Mullen told the publication that the recall was put into place because of the "possibility that some product may spoil before the 'Best When Used By' date."
Furthermore, he says, "Although this premature spoilage is not a food safety issue, the affected product may not deliver the high quality taste, texture and appearance our consumers expect from Oscar Mayer. We regret this situation and we apologize to everyone we have disappointed."
So, if you're disappointed by the Kraft recall, well, just ... try another type of turkey bacon? Or maybe just eat some eggs? Or cereal? Or oatmeal? Or toast? Or yogurt? There you go – #ProblemSolved
