Manti Te'o made one of the most important decisions of his career when he deleted his Twitter account, perhaps to prepare for the NFL draft but probably just to get past his weird "girlfriend" incident. When performing a search for Te'o's now infamous Twitter acount, a "Sorry, that page doesn't exist!" message comes up. This of course would not be news if it was any other Twitter account, but it is the account that was the source of so much controversy around the football star and his weird girlfriend situation.
We all know the tragedy of Manti Te'o and his girlfriend Lennay Kekua. So we also know that Lennay Kekua was not actually his girlfriend or a person at all and was some bizarre hoax that played out over the Internet during the height of Te'o's college career. In fact Kekua was actually Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, who also interacted with Te'o as the woman on texts and phone calls. Oh and Te'o actually knew this man in real life. Te'o was criticized for misleading us all about the personal relationship between him and Tuiasosopo. He also kept a Kekua-voiced phone call in December (months after her apparent death) from the media. The whole thing was a crazy story straight from the film and, now, hit MTV show "Catfish." This show expands on what the film of the same name had done with tracking down Internet girlfriends and boyfriends to reveal the true identities of the scammers. A ton of circumstantial evidence points to Te'o's involvement, but with the NFL draft coming up, we are all trying to move past this very weird story.
So Manti Te'o had a fake girlfriend that he said died but turns out was not real. So what. He still helped make Notre Dame a newsworthy college football team after years of dismal performances. Te'o has a career as a professional football player IN FRONT of him. He is looking FORWARD to the NFL draft and what is to come. Do you see what I am doing here? He is trying to move on from the controversy and focus on what he has to gain. Many critics felt that he could not recover from this, but when it comes down to it, he is a talented player.
Te'o was quite the Twitter user, but mainly because of this situation with Kekua. The decision to delete his account is an unbelievably smart one and shows that his football career is in the forefront of his life. So, congratulations Manti! You are on your way from getting away from this strange turmoil and hopefully into a comfy career. Focus on the draft and hopefully this will blow over. At least for a few months.
